This June has been a wet and humid summer with record rainfall. With rain, comes annoying and destructive leaks. Sometimes these leaks appear above or around your chimney base where brick meets your homes interior walls and ceiling. Many less experienced homeowners assume that these leaks are caused by missing mortar or tuckpointing. Leaks in your home are almost always caused by missing or incorrectly installed flashing. Flashing is a roofing issue; not a tuckpointing issue. Metals-including aluminum, zinc, copper and anodized aluminum–are used to provide a proper seal around the roofing tiles and chimney. Neglecting your St. Louis roof or gutters can cause erosion of your home’s mortar and joints. Tuckpointing can take of many issues, but preventing flashing leaks is not one of them. To find out whether you need tuckpointing, call Massey Tuckpointing. For flashing, call a trusted roofer.
